The Green Southern City


The streets of the old city of Osh developed spontaneously. The construction was carried out without preliminary projects; the streets often ended in dead ends, were narrow, winding, with high adobe walls. Currently, the city has 593 streets, of which 308 have concrete surfaces and 161 are unpaved.

The city has the microdistrict "Five-Year Plan" (1990-1994) with 50 streets, in the "Kalinin" area (1990-1994) — 80 streets, in the microdistrict "Ak-Tilek" (1990-1994) — 42 streets, and the 8th stage (1989-1991) — 62 streets. Of the total number of streets, 141 are named after notable people, including streets named after Navoi, Aitieva, Zainabettinov, Razzakov, Suymbaev, Frunze, Ibraimov, Fuchik, Ayni, Bokonbaev, Gorky, and others. Some street names reflect historical events: Victory, Jubilee, 25 Years of October, 50 Years of the Komsomol. Streets were named after leaders of the international proletariat: K. Marx, F. Engels, V. I. Lenin; fighters for the establishment and consolidation of Soviet power: V. Golubev, T. Khokhlov, U. Salieva; heroes of the Civil War: V. Chapaev, N. Shchors, G. Kotovsky; heroes of the Great Patriotic War: D. Pichugin, M. Jalil, S. Rakhimov; party, Soviet, and state figures: Ya. Sverdlov, M. Frunze, K. Voroshilov, F. Dzerzhinsky. Streets bear the names of scientists: M. Lomonosov, I. Kurchatov, S. Korolev; representatives of Russian and Soviet literature and art: L. Tolstoy, A. Chekhov, Gorky, A. Pushkin, F. Dostoevsky, V. Mayakovsky, Khamza, Ayni, G. Guliam, I. Repin, V. Surikov, M. Mussorgsky, M. Glinka.

Some streets are named after the capitals of other republics: Ashgabat, Tashkent, Kyiv, Moscow, Leningrad. The main thoroughfares of the city include: Sverdlov, Lenin, Kyrgyzstan, Telman, Gagarin, and others.

The General Director of the Department of Housing and Communal Services, B. Isiev, analyzing the activities of the city’s economy, established that there are 180 channels and irrigation networks around the city of Osh, of which 7 are pre-revolutionary rivers. The remaining irrigation networks appeared during the Soviet era. The largest channels are the Aravan-Akbura channel, built in 1968, with a length of 11.5 km. During the Soviet era, 70 automobile bridges were built and are operational in the city of Osh: over the Ak-Bura River — 7, over the Aravan-Akbura channel — 15, over the Kairma channel — 7, over the KD channel — 4, over the Jui-Pas channel — 8, over the Yak-Kallyk channel — 27, over the Muyan channel — 2, over the Southern channel — 1. There are 35 pedestrian bridges across rivers and channels, including: over the Ak-Bura River — 13, over the Aravan-Akbura channel — 4, over the Kairma channel — 4, over the Jui-Pas channel — 15, over the Yak-Kallyk channel — 9.

The city has 28 squares (near Osh State University, "Textile Worker," the House of Trade Unions, in the Theater Square, and others); four parks: Navoi, Toktogul, Victory, and Children's; two boulevards appeared in the city in the late 50s to early 60s at the square near the Pedagogical Institute. The first large fountain was built in the 1970s in the square between the Uzbek Musical Drama Theater and the "Chinara" restaurant. Later, fountains were constructed near the Kyrgyz Drama Theater, the House of Political Enlightenment, the House of Communications, the regional hospital, and the souvenir shop "Ak-Orgo."

The city hosts 21 enterprises, organizations, and institutions. All of them are located amidst the greenery of parks, squares, and individual plantings. The green spaces include 18,371 trees, 4,158 shrubs, 5,976 km of live hedges, 27,571 km of flower beds, and 19.74 km of lawns.
