What does the greeting custom “Assalamu Alaikum” mean?

The greeting of all Muslims begins with the words "Assalamu Alaikum." The custom of greeting each other with the words “Assalamu Alaikum” and “Wa Alaikum Assalam” has been passed down from our ancestors. Unfortunately, recently, especially among the youth and schoolchildren, it is starting to be forgotten. Greeting and responding to greetings is a sign of respect from a person. At present, when the question of strengthening interethnic friendship in a democratic society arises, this issue is particularly relevant. After all, politeness begins with a friendly greeting. However, if a person is in a quarrel with someone, they usually do not greet or respond coldly through clenched teeth. It is no secret that when someone greets you, it simply feels pleasant. This greeting custom “Wa Alaikum Assalam” should not be forgotten, starting from the family, children's institutions, schools, educational establishments, any organizations, public places, and others. If you think about the meaning of the words “Assalamu Alaikum” - it means “I wish you peace, tranquility, health,” and the response to the greeting “Wa Alaikum Assalam” means “I wish you the same” (translated from Arabic).

These words became widespread with Islam and were adopted by the peoples of Central and Near Asia, Africa since the year 1400, as confirmed by historical sources. It is necessary to greet and respond to greetings while pressing the right hand to the chest and slightly nodding the head. If we analyze the words “you” and “you” (formal), usually “you” is said among peers or if you know a person well. The word “you” expresses a certain distance, addressing a person you know little or someone older than yourself. Speaking in the formal “you” is a sign of politeness.
