Election of Manas as Khan
From the herd, where Aymanboz —
A beautiful, strong stallion,
Always a faithful leader,
Having slaughtered nine mares,
Dozens of fire pits dug,
Setting up a hundred cauldrons,
Filled with water, they lit the fire.
Here, gathering from all sides,
The Kyrgyz came together.
And all who arrived in Altai
Were counted by Akbalta himself.
And it turned out that there were
Almost a hundred thousand here.
— From all corners of our native land
We have come here to Altai,
With our labor and sweat here
We have acquired wealth and livestock.
But this land is foreign to us —
Anyone can ruin us.
The good earned by labor
Generates envy among enemies —
And it has been so since ancient times.
And so the Kyrgyz kin
Lives here in fear of death.
Manas with his warrior comrades
Drove away Zholoya, Neskara —
And once again China became hostile.
And to protect our people,
We must all, having gathered here,
Elect our Akim.
Kutubai rose from his place
And told the people, laughing,
That on the hunt there, in the mountains,
Er-Manas was chosen as Khan.
And he proposed to the people
To repeat that choice now.
But Manas replied to him:
— Galloping in the mountains the day before yesterday,
You chose me as Khan.
But that was just a game!
And we must choose
Our brother Kokche as Khan!
— Thank you, brother! — said Kokche.—
My shoulder is always with you!
I am ready for our native people
To go to death, Manas, with you!
There are many worthy among us,
But Manas must be Khan!
Here work and live together
Kazakhs, Mongols, Kalmyks, Kyrgyz,
There are also Kangai and Turgut,
Intertwined in their kinship,
Having mixed children.
To have harmony among people here,
The Khan must be the wisest of all.
I have no such wisdom! —
He said with a pure heart.
And here intervened, as always,
The wisest old man Akbalta:
— For Khan, young Er-Manas,
His father is too old for Khan.
But the rich bay Jakyp is a great wealthy man!
And by father and son, honor.
We will elect the father as Khan,
The son will be a hero with him.
And let them rule the khanate together!
While Jakyp protested,
He was lifted onto the felt,
With Manas placed beside him.
Under the loud beat of the dobulbas
The Nogai unfurled the banner
And carried it above their heads
Kyrgyz, Kalmyk, Mongol, Kazakh.
As soon as they walked seven steps,
Jakyp stopped the people:
— Thank you, dear ones.
But let there be only one Khan —
My mischievous — tentyek Manas!
And here Manas alone
Was lifted again above their heads,
They circled the yurt seven times
And the Khan's cap,
With purple velvet, with a trim,
Wrapped in a golden chain,
They immediately placed on him.
— You have become Khan, hero Manas!
Now we have unity!
And let there be peace among the people!
May Tengir protect you! —
Blessed the elders
And raised their hands to the sky.
