Invitation to the Memorial for Koketey
Here in the vastness of Karkyra,
Setting up yurts with a hearth,
They let the cattle roam on the slopes of the mountains.
In cauldrons, in bags — the kumys
Poured out with milk.
The son of Koketey, Bokmurun,
Called the young Aidar,
To saddle the stallion Maanikер,
He ordered to prepare for the journey.
— You inform the whole region,
That in late autumn, when
The cattle will gain weight,
When the forage of the summer pastures
Will burst the camel's belly,
Autumn will come to Karkyra,
In honor of Khan Koketey
I will hold a memorial feast.
Whoever does not come to the feast,
A cruel punishment awaits.
Such a command was given to me
Not by just anyone, but by Manas himself!
From Margilan, Malabek,
Khan of Andijan, Sanzybek,
From Samarkand, Alibek —
Let everyone come here,
To our memorial in Karkyra.
And further is the city of Bukhara,
Where the glorious Atemir rules —
Send him my greetings!
And closer to the mouth of the seven rivers
Live the people of Zhediger —
Invite Bagysha to visit us!
The master of mountains, valleys, and meadows,
The son of Budayik, Muzburchak —
You should invite him to the feast!
On the banks of the two rivers Kemin,
He was once a poor man, now a wealthy one —
Send my greetings to Urbyu!
There is the son of Eshtak, Jamgyrchy,
From all the Kyrgyz tribes,
Tell them that Manas himself
Asked them to come to the memorial feast!
And in the vastness of Sar-Arka
There is a valiant Kazakh, Kokche —
Invite him to us in Karkyra!
And there the Kalmyks of the salty clan,
Their ruler is Orokkyр,
And he has seen Koketey —
Invite him to the feast!
Go to the spacious nearby land,
Where Great China lies,
There the Khan of the Manchus, Neskara —
Invite him to the feast here!
And nearby is the elder Alooke —
Invite him to visit us!
On the banks of the great river
With the flowing yellow water,
Where Khan Konurbai rules —
Let him come with his retinue
To our grand feast!
And if he suddenly refuses,
If he climbs back on his high horse,
Then let him not expect mercy —
Manas himself will find a way! —
Such was the command given by Bokmurun.
Thousands of guests gathered
From Turkic and other tribes —
Relatives, neighbors, and enemies.
Kalmyks, Persians, and Manchus,
Chinese of the Han-su tribe,
Heroes, retinues, and armies.
And the leader of the Kankans,
The treacherous warrior Konurbai
Came with his entourage.
And Khan Neskara of the Manchus
Brought his troops for a reason:
He could not forgive the Kyrgyz
For what happened many years ago
When a caravan loaded with tea
Was captured by them on the way.
Harboring malice, Neskara
Decided to check personally,
What forces had gathered
For the feast in the valley of Karkyra.
And, visiting the Kyrgyz camp,
The Chinese Khan saw there
Valiant, fierce heroes
And with secret joy learned
That Manas was not among them.
He decided to look at the horses,
Ready for the races — alaman.
He saw the horse Maanikер —
And the Manchu Khan assessed
That this was a true buudan.
And Neskara, Konur, Zholoy
Held a council among themselves.
Neskara said to the heroes:
— I learned yesterday evening,
That here, to the memorial feast,
Manas did not come with his retinue.
It seems our turn has come
To punish the Buruts severely.
Hey, Bokmurun! Come here!
Why did you invite me?
Bring me your horse!
And if the horse is not here,
I will punish you, Burut!
And Bokmurun understood in fear,
That the memorial feast
Could end in bloody war.
He rushed to the yurt across the river,
Where the old man Koshoy was resting.
— What to do, dear uncle?
Neskara threatens with punishment,
With him are Konurbai and Zholoy.
I seem to have not fully understood
My father's bequest.
And I did not think about
That those whom you honor
Harbor enmity and revenge in their hearts.
I did not think that Neskara
Would anticipate Manas's arrival in Karkyra
By ten days.
His calculation was treacherous:
While Manas is not with us,
To wreak havoc on the Kyrgyz;
When Manas comes here,
To surround him with his retinue
And to slaughter him completely.
I see, dear uncle Koshoy,
We are holding the memorial feast in vain.
Here, in the vastness of Karkyra,
We are digging a grave for ourselves, —
Cried young Bokmurun,
Yesterday's favorite, brawler.
And the wise Khan Koshoy said:
— So, my naive young man,
If a scoundrel has a dream,
To take wealth and power for himself,
Without flinching, he will sacrifice
His own son and father.
At any cost, they want
To find a reason for war.
And if you give the horse,
They will find another courage.
They will cause a quarrel, so know!
And my advice to you, son:
Do not give the horse to the Chinese!
Quickly send a message to Manas
That Neskara, Zholoy,
And the vile Konurbai
Want to deal with you,
To disrupt our memorial feast.
And right then, uncle Koshoy
Wrote a letter to Manas,
And at night, by a secret path,
He sent it to Talas with Aidar.
