AGRICULTURE

Alamedinka
solto-bolokbay

At the beginning of sowing, someone from the people gives the first handful from the bag to the sower and asks for (blessings) from God.

After the completion of threshing and winnowing, they stick a shovel into the pile of grain and, after slaughtering a lamb, smear it (the shovel) with its blood.

In Susamyr, barley is sown on virgin land with a plow, then it is plowed and harrowed.

In Talas, grain is stored in oroo (pits, not burnt), surrounding them with straw.

In June-August, black currants ripen, and children, playing, smear their foreheads with its juice (? — F.F.)

HUNTING1

solto - karamoine

Ubraim paygambar2 — the first hunter with a gun. If someone shoots a kiyka or another beast, they say in the name of Ibrahim:
"Allah Akbar! May Ubraim paygambar grant us a camel"3 (Their souls should go to the prophet Ibrahim).

Chegir bayan — the patron of falconers and taigans, as they assist each other alongside the golden eagle.

Kozham zhat — a hunter, the enemy of Kaiberen (the patron of wild animals), wanted to kill all the beasts.

Dout paygambar4 — the first maker of guns and perhaps the first hunter.

Proverbs:

Birds in the sky, nets on the ground.
To the meek, God gives (prey) in different places (wherever he sets the nets).

Song:

Tavakenyn Yeshberde
My God loves and gives a bird.
When He gives a bird, He gives five.

The orphan Yeshberde from the Tavak family
God (loving him) gave a bird.
And He gave not one bird, but five in total.

The orphan Yeshberde went with 10 companions to catch falcons. The companions took the best places, and he, the orphan, was driven away. He left, dug himself a little pit, and set a net. He sat in the pit and held the string (from the bait). He immediately caught five falcons in the nets. And from this, he became rich after a few years, made a feast where the akyn (singer) sang the song written above.

Comments:

1 In the archive of F.A. Fielstrup, there is a large field material on hunting with falcons, based on which a large article (82 pages) titled "Hunting with Falcons among the Kyrgyz and Kazakhs" was written but, unfortunately, not published. It was widely used by G.N. Simakov (the manuscript of the article is kept with him) in his book "Falconry and the Cult of Birds of Prey in Central Asia (Ritual and Practical Aspects)," published in St. Petersburg in 1998. For more on hunting among the Kyrgyz, see: Abramzon S.M. Kyrgyz... pp. 93-100 (literature is also provided there); Aitbaev M.T. 2 The prophet Ibrahim, the patron of wild animals.
3 "God is great! May the prophet Ibrahim grant us a camel" (i.e., may the hunt be successful).
4 Dout (Dёёd) paygambar — the prophet David, the patron of crafts.
