Kulung Kol (Lake of the Foal)

Kulun Kol (the foal's lake)

A long time ago, high in the mountains at the foot of a gorge in Tar Alabyn (the Tar basin), there lived a beautiful and strong wild Sur Bée (gray mare). Every year she gave birth to healthy foals.

But one early winter, heavy snowfall occurred, and the horses ran out of feed. Packs of wolves circled around them. The deep snow made it impossible to escape from the predators. The clever mare led her foal up the gorge, but the wolves caught up with the exhausted foal.

In despair and hopelessness, the mare cried. Her tears touched the high cliffs, and they unleashed stones upon the predators. As a result of these landslides, lakes were formed, as clear as tears. People named them Kulun Kol (the foal's lakes).
