Umetov Jumabay

Umetov Jumabay

(1933-1995)
Applied artist. People's Artist of the Kyrgyz SSR. Laureate of the State Prize of the Kyrgyz SSR named after Toktogul. Born on May 4, 1933, in the village of Ichke-Dzhergez, Issyk-Kul region.

In 1954, he graduated from the Moscow Secondary Art School-Internat at the V.I. Surikov Institute, and in 1960, he graduated from the Leningrad Higher Artistic and Industrial School named after V.I. Mukhina, where he specialized in the artistic design of fabrics.

Since 1963, he has been a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.

Having received high professional training, J. Umetov worked based on the traditional artistic culture of the Kyrgyz people. The artist worked in various techniques of folk art - alakiiz (felt, felting), chiy (reeds, decorated with colored wool). Umetov's works are monumental panels, not only in size but also in the perception of space, color, and pattern. Their figurative significance and exquisite beauty require consideration in a museum exhibition or in a spacious modern interior.

An essential support for J. Umetov's applied art is his easel painting, predominantly natural landscapes, in which the bright decorative quality of color does not interfere with the truthful depiction of the character and states of Kyrgyz nature.

Umetov's works have been awarded the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts of the USSR and the Gold Medal of VDNH of the USSR. He was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Council of the Kyrgyz SSR and the medal "For Valorous Labor".
