Hershtein Izy Abramovich
Film director. Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz SSR (1974). Member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1953. Born on June 22, 1923, in Kyiv, Ukraine, in a working-class family. After finishing high school in 1941, he worked as a laboratory assistant at an elevator in Aktobe during evacuation. In February 1942, he moved to Frunze and began working at the studio as a lighting technician, then as an artist-animator, and from 1944 to 1949 as an assistant and operator's assistant. From 1950 to 1963, he shot about 350 stories for the newsreel "Soviet Kyrgyzstan" as an operator, including 16 special issues and documentary films such as "In the Valley of Susamyr," "Dam in the Mountains," "Big Chui Canal," "Safe Journey," "Kyrgyzstan Sings," "Kyrgyzstan at the VI World Festival," "They Were Born in the Tian Shan," "Sunny City," "Holiday of Kyrgyz Art," and the popular science essay "Shift-Pasture Content of Livestock."
I. Hershtein's directorial activity began with the release of the documentary film "With Mongolian Friends" (1959). A step towards cinematic journalism was the series of releases of the newsreel "Love Your City" (1959—1961). In 1960, the essay "Right Flank" appeared — the first attempt to create a documentary film portrait of a real hero — the renowned smelter Saidulla Tisheeva. A significant step forward was the film portrait "Artist Semyon Chuykov" (1962), which revealed to the audience the uniqueness of the creative path of the famous master of Kyrgyz painting.
The following films "Three Answers to the Mountains" (1963, diploma of II degree for the best chronicle-documentary film at the I review of documentary films in Ashgabat in 1963), "Shift" (1964, diploma of I degree for the best chronicle-documentary film at the IV review-competition of filmmakers from the Central Asian republics and Kazakhstan in 1965 in Almaty), "Boomerang" (1965, special diploma "For Sharp Publicistic Presentation of a Socially Significant Problem" at the V review-competition of filmmakers from the Central Asian republics and Kazakhstan in Ashgabat in 1966), "There, Beyond the Mountains, the Horizon" (1965, jointly with B. Galanter), "Cape of the Gnedoy Horse" (1966, diploma of II degree for the best chronicle-documentary film at the VI review-competition of filmmakers from the Central Asian republics and Kazakhstan in Dushanbe in 1967) marked the flourishing of the director's creativity.
The versatility of the documentary filmmaker's interests is manifested in the diversity of themes and genres chosen. Alongside the report film "Architect of the Scene" (1967), which tells about the daily life of the remarkable opera theater artist A. V. Arefyev, there is a historical-biographical essay "Chinghiz Aitmatov" (1968, diploma for the best popular science film and for the best script at the VIII review-competition of filmmakers from the Central Asian republics and Kazakhstan in Almaty in 1969), a report with lyrical portraits of border guards — "Outpost" (1968), a lyrical-visual film "Pamir — Roof of the World" (1969, prize "Silver Dolphin" at the International Film Competition of Geographical Films in Tehran in 1971), "mountaineering" reports — "Ice Reconnaissance" (1970), "Summit" (1970), "Summit of Friendship" (1972), sociological films — "Absolute Age" (1969), "Landing Point" (1969), "Why the Award?" (1973), "Workers of the Land" (1978), individual and group film portraits of heroes of labor — "High Voltage" (1972), "Happy Man" (1972), "Talaa-Bulak" (1976), "Goodbye, Mill!" (1977), "Shepherds" (1978), "Four Portraits" (1979), popular science essay "Archa" (1974), anniversary overview films "Ala-Too Salutation" and "Days of Kyrgyzstan in Moscow" (both in 1975).
Veteran of Kyrgyz documentary filmmaking I. Hershtein is an example of inexhaustible creative activity and tireless search. His films, made in different genres and varying in their aesthetic merits, teach to love labor, the native land, to protect and cherish nature, awaken in viewers civic feelings, a desire to live by the Moral Code of Communism, and to bring benefits to the state and their comrades every day, every hour.
