Russian. Born in the village of Medvezhka, Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.

Graduated from the Faculty of History of Novosibirsk State University (1974), postgraduate studies there (1977).

Worked as an associate professor, professor, currently - chief researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnography at Novosibirsk State University. Since 1982, he has participated in archaeological expeditions in Kyrgyzstan and is a mentor of the Archaeological Team of the Association of Young Historians of Kyrgyzstan.

Specialist in the field of ethnocultural and military history of ancient and medieval nomads of Central Asia.

Honorary member of the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations of UNESCO (2000), corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (2001).

Honorary member of the Association of Historians of Kyrgyzstan.

Awarded the Order of "Danaker" of the Kyrgyz Republic (2002). Laureate of the Asanbek Tabaldiev Prize.

Published over 680 scientific works, including 18 monographs.

Under his supervision, 6 candidate dissertations have been defended.
