
Poet and prose writer A. Omurkanov was born on June 2, 1945, in the village of Chesh-Dyube, Manas district, Talas region, in a peasant family.
In 1961, he graduated from Aral Secondary School, and in 1966, he graduated from the philological faculty of KSU.
He began his labor biography as a teacher at a Kyrgyz secondary school in the Murghab district of the Tajik SSR. Since 1970, he has been a correspondent and head of department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Sovettik Kyrgyzstan," and since 1986, he has been the head of the department of original fiction at the publishing house "Kyrgyzstan." In 1988, he was elected as the chief editor of the publishing house "Adabiyat."
He has been engaged in poetry since his student years. His first poetry collection "Meltur sezim" ("Bright Feeling") was published in 1973. The poet's verses have been published in Russian. He is the author of eight poetry collections and an active participant in many collective translated poetry publications.
A member of the CPSU since 1969 and a member of the USSR Union of Writers since 1973.
He was awarded the medal "For Labor Distinction."
