Poet Akbar Toktakunov
Poet A. Toktakunov was born in the village of Chym-Korgon in the Kemin district of the Kyrgyz SSR into a family of poor peasants. In 1945, he graduated from Kyrgyz Secondary School No. 5 named after A. S. Pushkin in Frunze. From 1961 to 1963, he studied at the Higher Literary School under the Union of Soviet Writers in Moscow.

He began his work biography in 1945 as the secretary of the board in his native collective farm. From 1947, he was a correspondent for the newspaper "Leninchil Zhas," from 1948— a translator in the editorial office of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan Pioneri," and from 1950— head of the department in the editorial office of the magazine "Zhash Leninchi." Then, from 1952, he was the responsible secretary of the magazine "Sovet Tik Kyrgyzstan," from 1955— the responsible secretary, and from 1959 to 1961— the chief editor of the satirical magazine "Chalkan." Since 1963, he has worked as the head of the department at the "Mektep" publishing house, from 1965— the head of the literary part of the Kyrgyz Academic Drama Theater, and from 1967 to 1969 and from 1971 to 1973— a literary consultant in the board of the Union of Writers of Kyrgyzstan. From 1969 to 1971 and from 1973 to 1976, he was a translator and head of the department in the editorial office of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan Madeniyati," and from 1976 to 1977— an editor at the "Kyrgyzstan" publishing house. Since 1977, he has been engaged in creative work.

He has been published since 1947. His first poetry collection "Algachky Kadam" ("First Steps") was published in 1953. He is the author of twenty poetry collections and several translated editions of works by K. Chukovsky, D. Bedny, S. Mikhalkov, G. Medynsky, S. Baruzdin, N. Gribachev, G. Leonidze, and others, and co-author of many collective translated poetry collections.

Member of the Union of Writers of the USSR since 1952.

Awarded the medal "For Labor Distinction."
