Generations of Kyrgyz and Kemkemchut

Excerpt from the work of Abu-l-Ghazi (1603—1664) — almost a retelling from Rashid ad-Din's "Collection of Chronicles" and Muhammad Haidar's "Tarikh-i Rashidi."

Text: Oghuz Khan had a grandson named Kyrgyz: the Kyrgyz descend from him; but in our time, very few people from this lineage remain. The Mongols and other tribes, having exterminated the Kyrgyz in fire and water, entered their land and, having settled here, took on the name of Kyrgyz. They themselves know from which lineage they come. Kyrgyz and Kemkemchut are two regions, close to each other; on both sides of them flow two great rivers, one called Selenga, the other Aikara-Muran; these two regions are called Abir and Siberia. Near them lived the Kyrgyz.

The Kyrgyz call their ruler Inal: this word for them is the same as for the Mongols (khan) and for the Tajiks, padshah. During the time of Genghis Khan, their ruler was Uruz-Inal. Genghis Khan, sending envoys to the Kyrgyz, demanded that they submit to him. Uruz-Inal, having warmly welcomed the envoy, did not go to the khan himself, but sent good men with him along with great gifts to express his vassalage. Among the gifts, the best was a white gyrfalcon with red legs, beak, and eyes.

Incorporation of the Kyrgyz into the Genghis Khan's Empire

Genghis Khan sent envoys to the Kyrgyz, Altan and Turamish, demanding submission. At that time, the ruler of the Kyrgyz was Uruz-Inal. He, having expressed submission to Genghis Khan, sent him the best men with gifts. Among the gifts, the best was a white gyrfalcon, with red legs, beak, and eyes.
