Kyrgyz of the Right and Left Wing

Kyrgyz of the right and left wing

Ichkiliki and Arkalyki.

The name "Ichkiliki" may have originated from the ancient Turkic word "ichik" — gravitating (to the center) and the word "el" — people, community,
i.e., ichik — el (il) — lik, ichikillik, ichkiliki — meaning — gravitating (to the center) (i.e., to the Kyrgyz of the right and left wing) people, el. However, "Ichkiliki" could also come from "ichik (ichki)" — internal, and the word "el" (il) — people, community, i.e., ichki-el-lik, ichkillik, ichkiliki — meaning — internal people (el). Thus, these tribes could have been named because they were located in the internal areas of the lands situated between the Kyrgyz of the right and left wings, who lived to the north, east, and southeast of the ichkiliks, uniquely surrounding them. As a result, the internal el could be called — ichkiliki, while the Kyrgyz of the right and left wings (from the side of the ichkiliks) — Arkalyki, i.e., external (for the ichkiliks) element.

Legends and Traditions
B. Soltonoev writes that according to the stories of the elders, regarding the history of the division of the Kyrgyz into the right and left wings, it is reported that from a certain Satyk (Satuk?) two sons were born. The elder was named Agul (Akul), and the younger — Kubul (Kuu Uul).

According to the first version — "The Mother said": Agul lay on her right side, "therefore let his offspring be called — Ong (right)." Kubul lay on the left side, "therefore let his offspring be called — Sol (left).

According to the second version, Agul nursed from the right breast — "let him be named — Ong (right)." Kubul nursed from the left breast — "let him be called — Sol (left).

According to the third version, Agul was named — Ong (right) because he led the right part (wing) of the army in one war, while Kubul was named — Sol (left) because he led the left part (wing) of the army.

According to the fourth version, the mountains of Ala-Too located between the Kyrgyz Ark (right and left wings) and the ichkiliks were taken as a border, and those who were on the right were called "Ong" (right), while those on the left were called "Sol" (left).

The History of Tagay

According to the history of Tagay, B. Soltonoev states that the Kyrgyz of Fergana from the right wing of the Ark (the combination of the right and left wings) descend from Adigine and Tagay, and people "know well their history and the history of the clans that came at that time." Relying on the stories of the elders, "who know the common history," as well as referencing the information from the lost work "Dzhavabname," composed in 1825-30, B. Soltonoev writes that Tagay was born around 1460-70, according to one account in the locality of Sary-bel, in the mountains of Osh, and according to another account in the localities of Iyrı-Suu, Bılpıldak in the Kokand region, Margilan. Furthermore, B. Soltonoev recounts legendary disputes and competitions between Tagay (his side) and Adigine (his side), their confrontations and land division, whereby Tagay allegedly received the areas located in Fergana.
