Status: VU. A species with a rapidly reducing range. The roots of this species contain up to 30% steroid compounds - saponins, which are used in perfumery, textile, food industries, and in the production of building materials.

Description. A perennial plant with a thick vertical root. Flowering stems up to 70 cm tall, branched from the base, with strongly bent branches, often forming almost spherical curtains like "tumbleweed". Leaves are linear-lanceolate, bare or rough, 1 - 3 cm long, 0.5 - 2 mm wide. The inflorescence is paniculate, multi-flowered. The calyx is 4 - 6 mm long, narrowly bell-shaped, bare. Petals are white or pink, entire at the tip.

Biological features. Flowers from June to August. Fruits in August-September. Propagation is by seeds.

General distribution and in the country. Distributed in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Within Kyrgyzstan, the species is found in the Chatkal, Talas, and Pskem mountain ranges.

Habitat. Savannas.

Population. Decreasing.

Limiting factors. Economic development of the territory and root collection.

Cultivation. Not conducted.

Existing conservation measures. Listed in the Red Book of the Kazakh SSR (1981), in the Red Book of the USSR (1984), and in the Red Book of the Uzbek SSR (1984). Protected in the Chatkal Reserve (Uzbekistan) and Besh-Aral (Kyrgyzstan).

Recommended conservation measures. It is advisable to make this species one of the main objects of protection in the Besh-Aral Reserve, where its population is still high, and to introduce the species into cultivation.

Status: VU. It is a perennial plant with reducing areas of occupancy. This plant has economic importance (roots contain up to 30% of saponins). Area of distribution: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan (Pskem, Talas, and Chatkal Mountain Ranges); habitats: savannas. The number in nature has a tendency to quickly decrease. Limiting factors: mass collection of roots, economic development of habitats. The species is included in the Red Books of adjacent Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, as well as in the USSR Red Book. It is under protection in Besh-Aral and Chatkal (Uzbekistan) Nature Reserves. This plant should be one of the main objects of protection in Besh-Aral Nature Reserve, where it is still numerous. It is recommended to introduce this species into cultivation.
