Kokomerensky Thermal Springs

Kokomerensky Thermal Springs are located 14 km upstream from the confluence of the Kokomerena River with the Jumgal River, on the right bank at the base of the embankment of the road that runs here, which has incidentally shifted the location of the springs' emergence; the absolute elevation of the springs is close to 1650 m.

The first description of the Kokomerensky thermal springs was made by V. P. Ryabin in 1916 during the survey of the Jumgal Valley and its mountainous surroundings. The water temperature in them was 41°C, and now it is difficult to find an outlet with a temperature of 35-38°C; the dilution of the springs has increased — earlier samples showed mineralization of 1.2-1.6 g/l, while currently it does not reach 1 g/l, although the composition remains the same, being sodium chloride-sulfate.

Among the features of the composition of the thermal springs in question is the high content of lithium, germanium, zinc, as well as radon at a level of about 15 nCi/l, which allows it to be classified as a therapeutic weakly radioactive water; hydrogen sulfide is also present in the water, but in insignificant amounts.

Despite the very valuable, and in some indicators even record-breaking composition among the thermal springs of Kyrgyzstan, significant resources (at least 0.5 l/s) of it at the Kokomerena River are not being utilized and are unlikely to be used in the near future — they emerge in a very unfavorable location for this purpose. It is hoped that the moment will come when water from a well drilled by the road on the right bank of the river will flow through pipes thrown across the Kokomerena to the health resort, which is comfortably located on the flat terraces of the left bank.
