Kyrgyzstan was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the years 2016-2018 following the elections held on October 28 in New York during the 42nd plenary session of the UN General Assembly.

– The Kyrgyz Republic, placing exceptional importance on strengthening and promoting the protection of human rights, the rule of law, and democracy at both national and international levels, nominated its candidacy for one of the main UN bodies. Seven countries contested for five vacant seats from the Asia-Pacific regional group of the UN, – reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted that Kyrgyzstan's candidacy ranked among the top three, receiving 147 votes out of 192 possible. The Central Asian republic will begin its membership in the UN Human Rights Council on January 1, 2016.

The first meeting of the Council took place on June 19, 2006. Kyrgyzstan became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992.
