Elections for the Mayor were held in Bishkek

Elections for the Mayor were held in Bishkek
Last Saturday, February 27, a long-awaited event took place in the political life of the capital. The city council elected a new leader for Bishkek. Albek Ibraimov became the new mayor: he was the only candidate for the position, and 42 out of 45 deputies voted for him.

Like the voting for his predecessor, Kubanychbek Kulmatov, the voting for Ibraimov was without alternatives. Civil society opposed this, demanding that the right to vote for the mayor be granted not to the deputies of the city council, but to all of Bishkek. Ibraimov was the only one who submitted an application within the established timeframe and passed the required exam in the state language. After the secret ballot and counting of votes, the head of the Bishkek City Council, Almazbek Kenenbaev, dressed the new mayor in a chapan and ak-kalpak, and also presented him with a whip as a symbol of power. After that, the newly elected mayor held a brief press conference. The media representatives were most interested in two questions: the first was about his close kinship with the detained deputy Maksat Kunakunov, who was arrested in the summer of 2015 and accused of aiding ISIS, and the subsequent change of documents from Erkin Kunakunov to Albek Ibraimov. Ibraimov acknowledged that Maksat Kunakunov is his nephew through his sister, noting that among relatives and friends he is indeed called Erkin, but he has never changed any identity documents.

The second question concerned the continuation of Kulmatov's initiatives for the improvement of the capital. Albek Sabirbekovich assured that the work would not stop.
- I was basically indifferent to who was changing light bulbs and taking out the trash. I was always satisfied with that. Now I will probably approach these issues differently. The systematic work that has been done on the municipal enterprise "Tazalyk" will continue, - he noted.
The new mayor also promised to solve the traffic congestion problem.
- I propose to tackle traffic jams by implementing work shifts. In many million-plus cities, the problem of transport collapses is solved as follows: students go to school at one time, municipal employees at another, and the rest at a third. This will significantly relieve the roads, - the official believes.
