For the first time in Kyrgyzstan, special rooms for children in conflict with the law and a hearing room in the building of the Lenin Court have been opened
Today, March 22, an official opening of two rooms took place at the Lenin District Court in Bishkek: waiting rooms for children who have become victims or witnesses of crimes and for children in conflict with the law, as well as a courtroom for children's cases. The opening was attended by the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic, the chairpersons of the First May, October, and Sverdlovsk District Courts of Bishkek, representatives of the British Embassy in Bishkek, and UNICEF.

- The development of justice for children in the Kyrgyz Republic is one of the priorities of the state program for 2014-2018. We will continue fruitful cooperation with our partners to ensure a humane justice process regarding children, - said Aida Seydakmatova, Chairperson of the Lenin Court.

The waiting room and courtroom have been created to provide a child-friendly environment for children who are under stress throughout the justice process. The room is equipped with necessary technical equipment, a small library, toys, informational posters, and legal literature for staff of the authorized state body for child protection, psychologists, lawyers, educators, and parents.

In the children's courtroom, there are no bars that usually confine defendants during court sessions. Judges specializing in juvenile justice conduct hearings without robes.

- UNICEF actively works with national partners at the state level and in pilot areas for the resocialization of children in conflict with the law, to help divert children from the criminal justice system and prevent reoffending, - emphasized Elena Zaychenko, UNICEF Child Protection Program Coordinator.
- For many years, the British Embassy in Bishkek has supported the protection and promotion of children's rights in Kyrgyzstan. Children in conflict with the law or who have become victims or witnesses of crimes are a vulnerable group. We sincerely hope that with the opening of these special pilot rooms, the needs of children will be addressed more attentively and in a child-friendly manner, - said Jamie Brockbank, Regional Advisor on Conflict Prevention at the British Embassy.

The facilities were equipped with the support of UNICEF in collaboration with the Public Foundation "Center for Law" with financial support from the British Embassy in Bishkek as part of the State Program for the Development of Justice for Children in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2014-2018 and the piloting of a juvenile justice system modeling project in Bishkek.
