The meeting of the heads of Japan and Kyrgyzstan was very productive
“The visit of the Prime Minister of Japan to Kyrgyzstan will go down in history as the first visit by the head of the Japanese government,” said the President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev during the summary of the meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Bishkek.
The head of Kyrgyzstan and the Prime Minister of Japan signed a joint statement on solidarity and partnership among democratic states during their meeting in Bishkek. They also signed a number of memorandums and agreements. In particular, the head of Japan signed a grant agreement between the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the project “Improvement of Equipment at Manas International Airport.”
– Equipment for air navigation and other necessary technology for Kyrgyzstan will be supplied for 16 million dollars to Manas Airport. We plan to implement the project throughout 2016. We have already purchased equipment for the airport with our own resources, but now it needs to be further equipped, – noted Shinzo Abe.
According to the Minister of Transport and Communications of Kyrgyzstan, Argyinbek Malabaev, a grant agreement has been signed between the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and JICA for the project “Improvement of International Highways,” under which Japan will allocate approximately 117 million US dollars for the rehabilitation of the Osh-Batken-Isfana highway.
– With these funds provided by Japan, sections from 28 to 75 kilometers and from 360 to 402 kilometers will be repaired. A total of 117 million dollars will be allocated for the project, but this is not all the grant funds. Starting next year, we should begin construction of the road, – reported Argyinbek Malabaev.
Almazbek Atambayev was also satisfied with the results of the meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister. According to him, he had a “constructive dialogue both in a narrow circle and in an expanded format” with Shinzo Abe.
– We reached a consensus regarding the development and strengthening of our bilateral relations. We have no serious contradictions or unresolved issues that would hinder our progress. I want to particularly emphasize the assistance that Japan provides – roads and bridges are being built with grants and loans, and the airport is being reconstructed. Japan was among the first countries to sign an agreement on bilateral relations back in 1992. Since then, tremendous assistance has been provided, and JICA has been doing very effective work, – concluded the head of Kyrgyzstan.
