Knights Without Fear and Iron: Results of the Central Asian Championship in Modern Sword Fighting Held in Bishkek

The first Central Asian Championship in modern sword fighting took place in Bishkek. This relatively new direction of historical medieval combat brought together enthusiasts of knightly romance from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. More than 60 participants fought for the title of the best warrior. The notable tournament was initiated by the capital's Historical Reconstruction Club "Guardia" with the support of the Russian Federation of Modern Sword Fighting (SMB).

Modern sword fighting (SMB) resembles a mix of martial arts and fencing. However, it lacks the throwing and striking techniques that are canonical in disciplines like aikido or karate. Moreover, thrusting strikes, characteristic of fencing, are prohibited. Additionally, unlike historical medieval combat or historical fencing, the gear and weapons are much lighter. Instead of steel swords and heavy armor, there are sports helmets with reinforced metal visors, soft body protection, special shields, and safe swords. The equipment is made from polymer materials.

According to SMB rules, a fighter has 10 lives; if an opponent strikes with the blade to the head or body, two lives are taken away, and one life is lost for strikes to the limbs. The one who runs out of lives first loses. Judges count clear hits.

A feature of SMB is that anyone can participate, regardless of age and level of physical fitness.

In the overall standings, Kyrgyz fighters won 11 medals, including 3 gold, 9 silver, and 8 bronze. Gold medals were won by Vitalina Levchenko from "Guardia," who defeated her opponents in the women's triathlon in the 16-17 age category, Anatoly Bovkunenko from "Ratnik" in the category "Triathlon, boys and girls 14-15 years," and Adilet Bayyzbekov from "Ratnik" in the nomination "Duel Sabre," boys 16-17 years old.
