Hiking in the Tian Shan
The hiking routes in the Tian Shan range from altitudes of 1000 to 3000 meters, so during such a journey, and sometimes even within a single day, you can encounter different climate zones and even seasons. To feel comfortable while hiking at such altitudes, you need to have the following with you:
Equipment for Hiking in the Tian Shan
Sleeping bag – it is advisable to take a three-season bag with a comfort temperature of 0°C. These specifications are relevant if the overnight stay on the route is at an altitude of over 2000 meters.
Sleeping mat – made of polyurethane and is essential for any hike. It isolates the body from the cold ground on which the camp is set up. An indispensable and mandatory item for every tourist.
Backpack (45-55 liters for girls, 60-80 liters for boys) – the volume of the backpack is individual, depending on the number of days in the hike and the person's ability to pack the backpack properly. If you don’t want to think about packing – take a larger backpack. However, the skill of packing things in the backpack should still be developed ;)
Sitting pad – will provide you with comfort at the bivouac and, most importantly, will spare you from the extremely unpleasant consequences of sitting on cold ground. Hypothermia of the pelvic organs can lead to serious issues.
Tent – this is your home while hiking. A regular two-layer tent with a waterproof rating of at least 3000 mm and wind resistance will suffice. If you don’t have a tent – make sure there is a place for you in someone else's tent.
Trekking poles – help while walking, relieving stress on the joints, improving circulation, and often saving you on loose terrain.
Clothing
In addition to the listed equipment, you need to have a complete set of clothing that protects you from the environment and does not add excessive weight. All items should be multifunctional and technical.
So, here’s a list of clothing for hiking in the mountains at altitudes of 1000-3000 meters:
Boots – it is advisable to have high-quality leather waterproof trekking boots. There are many areas in the mountains with loose rocks and stone piles; you should not be slipping on them. Please take the choice of footwear seriously.
Sandals – after a day’s hike, it is necessary to take off your boots and give your feet a rest. This will help prevent blisters. Don’t forget to bring this lightweight footwear for relaxation at the camp.
Pants – you need durable pants for everyday wear. Windproof, quick-drying, and lightweight. It’s great if these pants have removable lower parts and can turn into shorts.
Jeans – are categorically unsuitable! Heavy and take a long time to dry.
T-shirt – take 2-3 t-shirts that wick moisture well and dry quickly. Don’t be afraid of synthetics while hiking.
Thermal underwear – indispensable for sleeping and in cold weather. It wicks moisture away and helps keep you warm during active movement.
Fleece jacket – Polartec is one of the best modern materials that will keep you warm on any hike. It also compresses easily and dries quickly. Wool sweaters are not suitable!
Jacket – preferably a membrane jacket that protects against precipitation and wind while being breathable. If you have such a jacket, you can skip bringing a raincoat.
Socks – the number of pairs depends on the duration of the hike. If finances allow – take special trekking socks; they prevent blisters and water blisters on the feet.
Hat – will become a warm helper in the evenings at altitude or in bad weather.
Headwear to protect against the sun.
