Situation Regarding the Case
On January 16, 2024, a mass detention occurred in Kyrgyzstan, during which 11 individuals associated with the projects Temirov Live and "Ait, ait dese" were arrested. These journalists were accused of "inciting mass riots" in connection with their professional activities.On October 10, 2024, Mahabat Tajibek kyzy, head of Temirov Live, was sentenced by the Lenin District Court of Bishkek to six years in prison.
On December 18, 2024, the Bishkek City Court upheld this conviction.
On February 25, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic also upheld the decision of the first instance court.
Despite the fact that Mahabat Tajibek kyzy is the mother of a minor child, the court denied her a deferral of the sentence, although such an option is provided for in the legislation of Kyrgyzstan.
UN Opinion
Human rights organizations point out that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention established that Kyrgyzstan violated seven articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and six articles of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.In its conclusion, the group noted that the arrest of Mahabat Tajibek kyzy was a consequence of her lawful journalistic activities and expression of opinions, including investigations into corruption.
The UN Working Group demands:
- the immediate release of Mahabat Tajibek kyzy;
- compensation for unlawful deprivation of liberty;
- an investigation into the actions of officials involved in her arrest.
