Petition for Early Presidential Elections. How Did Former Officials Comment on the Appeal?
Seventy-five individuals, including current and former politicians, officials, cultural figures, and businessmen, signed an open letter calling for early elections. So far, the president's administration has not commented on this matter.
Content of the appeal The authors of the letter note that the current president was elected in 2021 under the old Constitution, which prescribed a six-year term. However, the new Constitution, adopted in a referendum in April 2021, establishes a five-year term with the possibility of two terms. According to the Law "On the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic," which came into force on May 5, 2021, the term served by the president is considered the first term under the new Constitution.
The letter also emphasizes that there is disagreement among lawyers and politicians: some believe that early elections are the only way out, while others insist on waiting for the current term to end.
