A temporary governing body, granted the powers of the Supreme Leader of Iran until a new spiritual leader is elected, has been formed. According to the ISNA agency, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has taken a key legal position in this council.
According to Iranian law, until a new spiritual leader is elected, the country will be governed by a special commission. In addition to 67-year-old Arafi, the commission includes President Masoud Pezeshkiyan and the head of the judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei. The inclusion of Ayatollah Arafi in the ruling triumvirate was approved by the Council for the Determination of Political Expediency.
Alireza Arafi, who is considered a trusted figure of Ali Khamenei and one of the most influential Shia figures, will jointly perform the duties of the Supreme Leader with his colleagues. This transitional period is expected to last until the Assembly of Experts, consisting of 88 theologians, selects a permanent candidate for the highest position.
Alongside the political changes, there have been personnel reshuffles in the military sector: Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
