According to Alexander Perendzhiev, an associate professor at the Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, the declaration of jihad against Israel and the USA by Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi has initiated a religious war. This comment was made in an interview with the publication "Lenta.ru".
Perendzhiev noted that Shirazi is a recognized Shia theologian, and the largest Shia community, besides Iran, is concentrated in Iraq. He emphasizes that this declaration of war should be followed by a reaction from the Shia ummah. It is quite possible that at the initial stage, the jihad will not be large-scale and will be limited to the territory of Iran and part of Iraq.
The political scientist also added that the expansion of the conflict to full-scale levels could occur in the event of a fatwa being issued, which would escalate the situation and involve not only Shia but also Sunni Muslims in the conflict.
"This will be a serious test for the USA and Israel, as waging war against a state is one thing, but against all Shia, and possibly all Muslims, is entirely different. Such a declaration indicates that the conflict could escalate into a protracted war," concluded Perendzhiev.
