The Deputy Chairwoman of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic, Nurgul Bakirova, reported that the number of domestic violence cases in Kyrgyzstan increased by almost 24% in 2025. This statement was made at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, where important aspects of implementing the decisions of the Fourth World Conference on Women are being discussed.
This year, the courts reviewed 1,196 cases related to domestic violence, which, according to Bakirova, indicates not only the relevance of this issue but also the growing trust of citizens in the judicial system and an increase in the detection of such offenses.
The event is also attended by a Kyrgyz delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov. Discussions are taking place during the session on issues related to ensuring the rights of women and girls, as well as overcoming the barriers they face.
Bakirova emphasized that access to justice for women and girls is one of the strategic directions of sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan. However, like in many other countries, there are economic, geographical, and cultural barriers that hinder this.
She also noted that there are laws in Kyrgyzstan aimed at protecting the rights of women, including the law "On State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women" and the law "On Protection from Domestic Violence." Additionally, a National Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030 is being implemented.
The annual international forum on gender equality involves representatives from 107 countries. The session will last until March 19 and will focus on ensuring access to justice for all women and girls.
