“This is an unnecessary and unwelcome strain”
Former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Felix Kulov expressed his opinion on social media that holding early presidential elections could pose a threat to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit scheduled for this fall.
He believes that the upcoming elections are unjustified both in terms of Sadyr Japarov's presidential term and considering his support from the population.
Kulov emphasizes: “If Sadyr Japarov decides to announce early elections, he will have to resign. In my opinion, such a decision would be a mistake. Our SCO partners will not understand this step, as it could disrupt the summit planned for the fall.”
The politician is confident that elections can be held in 2027, after the SCO summit and the Nomad Games, which are also scheduled for that time.
Additionally, Kulov added that even if Japarov announces early elections and resigns for three months, it would not be difficult for him to regain the presidency. However, such uncertainty, both within the country and for international partners, would create unnecessary tension. In his view, this would negatively affect government members and other officials, as a new government must be formed in accordance with the Constitution a month or a month and a half after the elections. “The question is, who needs this?” - Kulov concluded.
