The 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is taking place in New York, where Kyrgyzstan is represented by a delegation led by Edil Baisalov, Deputy Prime Minister. This was reported by the press service of the Supreme Court.

The delegation also includes Nurgul Bakirova, Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court, and other officials.

During the session, Kyrgyz participants are engaging in general debates dedicated to the measures taken after the Fourth World Conference on Women and the twenty-third special session of the UN General Assembly. Additionally, participation is planned in a high-level meeting concerning violence against women and girls.

In her speech, Nurgul Bakirova emphasized that access to justice for women and girls is a strategic priority for the sustainable development of Kyrgyzstan.

She noted that despite the proclaimed principle of equality, women and girls in many countries, including Kyrgyzstan, continue to face numerous systemic barriers, such as economic, geographical, informational, and socio-cultural factors.

Bakirova also reminded about existing national legislative initiatives aimed at gender equality and preventing domestic violence, including the Law on State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women and the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence.

According to judicial statistics, in 2025, 1,196 cases related to domestic violence were considered in Kyrgyzstan, which is a 24% increase compared to the previous year. Bakirova noted that this growth indicates the ongoing seriousness of the problem, as well as an increase in the detection of offenses and trust in the judicial system.

She also highlighted the National Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030, which includes improving legislation, strengthening protection mechanisms, expanding women's participation in public and political life, and supporting their economic independence.

Representatives from 107 countries are participating in the international forum on gender equality. The session will last until March 19, and the main theme of the meeting is strengthening access to justice for all women and girls.
