Amur Goby - Rhinogobius brunneus = R. similis
Like the Amur loach, this species was introduced into the water bodies of Kyrgyzstan along with Amur herbivorous fish. It quickly spread not only in the water bodies of the Chui Valley but also in the Issyk-Kul region and the Toktogul Reservoir. It reaches a length of 6 cm, with typical sizes being 4–5 cm. Males are larger than females and are more brightly colored, with a bright sheen on the first dorsal fin. There is a suction cup on the chest formed by modified ventral fins.
The Amur goby has an interesting adaptation that allows it to attach to any surfaces, including glass – its pectoral fins form a kind of suction cup, enabling this fish to move in streams with strong currents.
It reaches sexual maturity by the second year of life. Spawning occurs in batches. The breeding season lasts from the second half of spring through most of the summer. Fecundity ranges from 400 to 1000 eggs. It builds nests in the current in crevices between stones. The adhesive eggs are attached to the "ceiling" of the nest. The male guards the clutch. The eggs are spindle-shaped.
It feeds on small benthic organisms, primarily remnants of higher aquatic plants and algae, chironomid larvae, copepods, amphipods, as well as detritus.
The fish adapt well to aquariums. Each goby occupies its own territory and defends it against intrusions from neighbors. When encountering a rival, the goby spreads its fins, opens its mouth, and flares its gill covers. After such a frightening display, few will dare to encroach on its habitat.
