Sergey Vakunov: Russia and Kyrgyzstan aim for a trade turnover of $5 billion

On the occasion of Diplomatic Worker Day, Sergey Vakunov, the Russian ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, held a briefing where he summarized the past year and outlined key directions for further bilateral cooperation.

According to the diplomat, the year 2025 will be a significant milestone in the relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan, as it marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Eternal Friendship, Alliance, and Partnership. This document has become the foundation for strategic cooperation between the two countries, which is actively developing at various levels.

Preserving Historical Memory

Sergey Vakunov emphasized the importance of historical memory. Large-scale events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War were held in Kyrgyzstan and Russia. The ambassador noted that attempts to alter public history and distort the contribution of the Soviet people will not be successful. The "Immortal Regiment" movement continues to be an important symbol of preserving historical truth and has become part of the family history for both Russians and Kyrgyzstani people.

Trade and Economy

A positive trend is observed in the economic sphere. According to data from the National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, the volume of mutual trade has already exceeded $3.1 billion. Vakunov noted that the countries have every chance to fulfill the presidents' directive and increase trade turnover to $5 billion through investments, new projects, and the development of production cooperation.

Plans for 2026

The upcoming year promises to be equally eventful. One of the main topics will be Kyrgyzstan's chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, in which Russia is ready to provide comprehensive support. Among the planned events:

the 27th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission in Kazan; the Russian-Kyrgyz business forum at Issyk-Kul; an interregional conference.

The Importance of the Russian Language and Education

The Russian language, which has official status in Kyrgyzstan, plays an important role in strengthening ties between peoples. According to Vakunov, the absence of a language barrier contributes to development and opens new opportunities for youth in their careers.

A key humanitarian project will be the construction of nine schools with Russian language instruction in Kyrgyzstan. The first three educational institutions are planned to open on September 1, 2027, in Bishkek, Karakol, and Batken. Russia will continue to support the Kyrgyz educational system, including the supply of adapted textbooks.

Trust and Migration Issues

Sergey Vakunov emphasized that a trusting relationship has developed between Vladimir Putin and Sadyr Japarov, which creates a foundation for active cooperation.

On migration issues, Russia is interested in attracting qualified specialists while adhering to all legislative norms. The ambassador noted that within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union, the principle of "four freedoms" is maintained: citizens of Kyrgyzstan can work in Russia without a patent if they have an employment contract.
