Ruslan Akun, a renowned Kyrgyz director and producer, shared his thoughts on the current state of the film industry in Kyrgyzstan, as well as the challenges faced by filmmakers and the prospects for international recognition of Kyrgyz films.
“At the moment, we are seeing positive dynamics. Last year, we achieved significant success, as 56% of the total box office came from domestic films. This is an important achievement for us,” noted the director.Akun also emphasized that in the current conditions, many paths for the development of cinema are opening up, and they need to be fully utilized. “Now is a great time: the world is open, opportunities are limitless. We cannot complain; we just need to seek,” he added.

“Our country has about seven million people, and each of them has their unique story if presented correctly,” he added.Speaking about the prospects for entering the international arena, the director noted that a film should be local but at the same time accessible to audiences outside the country.
“If we continue to develop and improve, we have every chance to become, if not Korea, then at least Indonesia. This is quite achievable,” emphasized Akun while discussing the future of Kyrgyz cinema.
As for his personal role in this field, Ruslan Akun succinctly expressed: “I want to make what I like.”
