Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, confessed to killing the politician with a homemade weapon. The prosecution insisted on life imprisonment, while the defendant's lawyers suggested limiting the sentence to twenty years in prison.
The incident occurred on July 9, 2022, when Shinzo Abe was giving a speech in support of his Liberal Democratic Party ahead of the upper house elections. Shortly after he began his speech, witnesses reported hearing two shots, and the politician fell, clutching his chest.
