The Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takichi, announced her decision to dissolve the lower house of parliament during a press conference on Monday, which will allow for elections to be held.
She stated: “Today, as Prime Minister, I have made the decision to dissolve the lower house of parliament.”
The parliamentary session is set to begin on January 23.
“I want the citizens to decide for themselves whether they trust Sanae Takichi to govern the country. In Japan, it is not possible to directly elect a Prime Minister. However, elections for the lower house of parliament are considered crucial for forming a government. If the Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party (Nippon Ishin no Kai) gain a majority, I will remain in the position of Prime Minister,” she added.
Takichi noted that at the moment, the LDP does not hold a majority in either house, even though its leader occupies the position of Prime Minister. There has also been a change in the ruling coalition following the exit of the Komeito party.
“Therefore, we decided to appeal directly to the people, rather than acting based on political interests,” she emphasized.
The elections for the lower house of parliament are scheduled for February 8.
