From October 15 to 17, the 31st Congress of the Mongolian People's Party (MPP) is taking place. During the first day, delegates elected Uchral Nyam-Osor, who holds the position of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Development, as the new chairman of the party.
Against the backdrop of a split that lasted nearly a month, Prime Minister Zandan Shatar Gombojav and former speaker Amarbayasgalan Dashzevge announced their decision not to participate in the elections for the party leader, which caused internal conflict.
The candidacy of Uchral Nyam-Osor was proposed by the Executive Council, and Lkhagjav Baatarjav, president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Mongolia, was nominated at the congress.
The election of the new chairman was conducted by secret ballot. According to the chairman of the vote counting commission, Member of Parliament and Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing Bat-Amgalan Enkhtaiwan, out of 2086 delegates, 2079 votes were valid, while seven were deemed invalid.
Uchral Nyam-Osor won convincingly, receiving 94.95% of the votes (1974 from party members), while his opponent Lkhagjav Baatarjav garnered 105 votes, which corresponds to 5.05% of the total.
The handover of the party chairman's seal took place with the participation of the former chairman of the MPP, as well as the 32nd and 33rd Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai, former speaker Amarbayasgalan Dashzevge, party secretary general Sodbaatar Yangug, Prime Minister Zandan Shatar Gombojav, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Bat-Erden Jadamba, and congress chairman Batjargal Zhigjida. They congratulated the new chairman and wished him success in his future work.
The second day of the congress was dedicated to discussing the party's program and making amendments to the charter in accordance with current legislation on political parties.
The discussion, which began at 9:00, lasted more than ten hours, during which participants thoroughly reviewed the amendments and expressed their opinions.
As a result, the delegates of the 31st MPP congress approved the draft amendments to the party's program and charter.
The third day of the congress will be devoted to renewing the composition of the supervisory committee and electing members of the conference.
