
Irakli Garibashvili, the former Prime Minister of Georgia, has reached a procedural agreement with the prosecution, under which he will spend five years in prison and pay a fine of 1 million lari, reports DW.
According to the initial charges, Garibashvili could have faced a sentence of 9 to 12 years in prison. Additionally, during searches, $6.5 million was seized from him.
At the end of October, the prosecution officially charged the former prime minister with the legalization of large illegal incomes. According to the investigation, from 2019 to 2024, when he served as Minister of Defense and then Prime Minister, Garibashvili conducted business and disguised the funds received as gifts from relatives. He also registered property in the names of his relatives.
Garibashvili is one of the founders of the ruling party "Georgian Dream," which was established in 2011. At one point, he held the position of chairman of this party.
