In Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received a death sentence from the International Criminal Tribunal. This decision was made in absentia and is related to charges of crimes against humanity that she committed during the unrest that occurred last year, as reported by Kazinform, citing NDTV.

The court found Hasina guilty on three counts, concluding a months-long trial in which she was accused of using brutal measures to suppress student protests. These events led to the downfall of her party, the Awami League.

The commission, consisting of three judges chaired by Mohd Golam Mortuza Majumder, also issued rulings regarding two of her subordinates — former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who were also found guilty on the same charges.

According to the court's findings, all three defendants acted in collusion, committing atrocities aimed at killing protesters across the country. However, the former police chief was pardoned.

Prior to the sentencing, security measures were heightened in the country, local television reported.

It is worth noting that on August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina resigned and left Bangladesh amid protests against her government that began in early July due to high unemployment rates among students.
