The number of fatalities after the riot in the Ecuadorian prison has risen to 31 people

As a result of the riots in the prison of Machala, Ecuador, the death toll has risen to 31 people. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing data from the National Service for Comprehensive Assistance to Adult and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI).

According to information provided by the media, the bodies of four inmates were found on Sunday morning, and later, in one of the prison pavilions, another 27 people were discovered, who were determined to have died from asphyxiation.

In a statement from SNAI posted on the social network X, it is specified: "In connection with the incident at the detention center in Machala, the death of 27 inmates has been confirmed, who died as a result of asphyxiation caused by hanging."

It was previously reported that as a result of the riot that occurred at dawn in the prison of El Oro province, four people died, and another 43, including one police officer, were injured.

Local sources claim that the bodies of the deceased were found in one of the prison buildings after the morning clash, indicating the violent nature of the events rather than a mass suicide by the inmates.
