According to information from Meduza, 64 people died during a large-scale police operation in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

According to G1 and CNN Brasil, among the deceased are 60 suspected drug traffickers and four police officers. As a result of the clash, three local residents were also injured.

This operation, dubbed the largest in the state's history, led to the arrest of 81 individuals. Among those arrested was one of the leaders of the criminal group "Red Command" (Comando Vermelho, CV), and weapons and vehicles were seized.

About 2,500 police officers participated in the operation. On the morning of October 28, when they arrived with arrest warrants, gang members opened fire and blocked streets in several areas, setting up barricades, as reported by G1.

Due to the operation, medical facilities and schools in the Alemão and Penha areas temporarily ceased operations, and public transport routes were altered to avoid casualties among the civilian population.

Regular police operations in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro are part of a strategy to combat organized crime. According to G1, the current operation differs from previous ones in terms of casualties and has become the deadliest in the city's history. The previous deadliest incident was the operation in the Jacarezinho favela in May 2021, which resulted in the deaths of 28 people, including both police officers and suspects.
