In the elections held on October 12, 92-year-old Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982, was re-elected as president. The voting results were announced by the Constitutional Court, which confirmed his victory with 53.66% of the votes.
According to information from the "Russian service of the BBC," the official election results were announced after a 15-day period allocated for vote verification. The electoral commission noted that the voting took place peacefully.
Interestingly, during the election campaign, Biya held only one rally, spending most of his time in Europe on a private visit.
Nine other candidates also participated in the elections, including two of his allies who left their ministerial positions to take part in the elections.
However, opposition leader Maurice Kamto, who is 71 years old, was unable to participate in the elections. This decision was confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
For most citizens of Cameroon, over 60% of whom are under 25 years old, Biya is the only president they have ever known.
