She became the third woman to hold this position in the country's history
On October 26, it was announced that independent candidate Catherine Connolly won the presidential elections held on October 24 in Ireland.
Catherine Connolly, born on July 12, 1957, in a suburb of Galway, became the third female president of Ireland. She grew up in a carpenter's family. In 1981, she graduated from the University of Leeds with a master's degree in clinical psychology and worked in the field for a while. Later, in 1989, she graduated from the law faculty of the University of Galway and became a lawyer in 1991, focusing her practice on family law.
As a politician with leftist views, Connolly advocates for social justice and the country's neutrality in international affairs.
She will replace President Michael Higgins, who has held the position since 2011, and whose term ends on November 12.
