In the New Zealand Parliament, an initiative is being discussed to introduce a bill that will limit social media use for young people. This information was reported by Reuters.

The new bill proposes a ban on access to social media for individuals under the age of 16, and companies like Facebook and TikTok will be required to verify the ages of their users.

The initiative reflects similar laws in Australia, and National Party MP Catherine Wedd has suggested adapting such a law for New Zealand as well. While some party members support this idea, other politicians prefer to remain on the sidelines.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized that excessive use of social media negatively affects teenagers, contributing to stress, bullying, and self-esteem issues.

There is currently no specific date for when the bill will be discussed in Parliament. A report on the impact of social media on youth is expected to be ready by early 2026.
