In Rio de Janeiro, 64 people died during a shootout between police and a gang

In this tragic incident, among the victims were four police officers and 60 suspected drug traffickers linked to the local gang "Red Command" (Comando Vermelho, CV). Additionally, three local residents were injured during the shootout.

As a result of the operation, described by the authorities of Rio de Janeiro as the largest in the state's history, 81 people were arrested, and weapons and vehicles were seized. Among the detainees is one of the leaders of the "Red Command" in this region.

About 2,500 police officers participated in the operation. On the morning of October 28, when they arrived with arrest warrants, gang members opened fire, blocked streets in several areas of Rio, and set fire to barricades, as reported by G1.

Due to police actions in the Alemão and Penha areas, the operation of medical facilities and schools was suspended, and public transport routes were changed in advance to minimize risks for citizens.

Operations in the favelas are a regular practice of the authorities in Rio de Janeiro in the fight against organized crime. According to G1, the current operation in Alemão and Penha has become the deadliest in the city's history. Previously, the record for the number of victims belonged to an operation in the Jacarezinho favela, which took place in May 2021, when 28 people were killed, including police officers and suspects.
