The reason for the mass protests was the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manso, who was shot by members of a drug cartel in early November during the Day of the Dead celebrations. This tragic event became a symbol of the impunity of organized crime and the authorities' inability to ensure the safety of citizens. Demonstrations under the slogan "Generation Z" took place in various cities across the country. Although the march began peacefully, it escalated into violence involving police in the capital. According to The Washington Post, protesters used stones, firecrackers, and other objects to attack law enforcement and seize their equipment. Mexico City’s Minister of Public Security, Pablo Vasquez Camacho, reported 120 injured, including 100 police officers. According to Reuters, about 40 police officers were hospitalized, and 20 civilians were also injured. As a result of the unrest, 20 protest participants were detained. The youth protests were joined by representatives of opposition parties who criticized President Claudia Sheinbaum for her ties to drug cartels and her inability to combat organized crime, chanting: "Sheinbaum is the drug president."
