The opening of the square has become a symbol of the historical and cultural relations between the two countries. This event is also timed to coincide with the launch of the Alley of Eternal Friendship between Kazakhstan and Russia in Astana.

The square is located in close proximity to the "Alma-Aty" metro station and the street of the same name. The metro was named after Almaty in 2012, where the Panfilov Division was formed during World War II.

“We are opening the Friendship Square of Kazakhstan and Russia. For us, this is more than just another green space in the capital — it is an important step reflecting the long-standing traditions of respect, trust, and personal friendship between the presidents of our countries, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Vladimir Putin. This square symbolizes the eternal friendship between our peoples, tested by time and history,” emphasized the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aida Balayeva.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia, Andrei Yatskin, noted that the creation of the square is a confirmation of the good-neighborly and strategic relations between Russia and Kazakhstan, initiated by the Moscow authorities and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

Now the square represents a new public space where residents can walk, relax, and meet. Locals note that the landscaped area is convenient for walks with children and pleasant leisure activities.

The renaming of the square coincides with the state visit of the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to Russia.
