Bishkek on the verge of creating a new city symbol
In the center of Kyrgyzstan's capital, on the site between Abdrahmanov and Ibraimov streets, work is actively underway to transform a traditional intersection into a modern public space. The main goal of this project is not only to update the area but also to create a new cultural center where residents can meet, relax, and spend time.
The initiator of the changes is Nariman Tuleev, a businessman and former mayor of Bishkek. He emphasizes that the transformations will affect not only the appearance but also the functionality: there will be a smooth and non-slip surface, convenient pedestrian crossings with timers, comfortable benches, as well as soft lighting for trees, buildings, and water bodies. In the evening, this space will become a venue for cultural events where residents can enjoy the atmosphere of comfort and street performances.
Times Square: the symbol of New York's 24/7 life
Times Square is the heart of New York, embodying the city's vibrant life. It is the place where Broadway and Seventh Avenue intersect, and where the lights never go out. Here, hundreds of thousands of tourists meet, bright neon lights shine, Broadway musicals play, and numerous street events take place — all of which make Times Square known as the "Crossroads of the World."
Times Square, New York
However, Times Square did not always look as it does now. In the 70s and 80s, this area was associated with insecurity, chaos, and crime. But thanks to the efforts of local authorities and businesses that invested in infrastructure and safety, the square gradually took on a modern appearance. Now it has become a symbol of cultural life, hosting concerts, events, and celebrations.
Today, a similar "Times Square" for any city symbolizes the transformation of a regular intersection into a vibrant heart of urban life, where people can enjoy the evening lights and cultural events.
Bishkek is getting its version of Times Square
Every major city has its iconic places: Red Square in Moscow, Piccadilly Circus in London, the Champs-Élysées in Paris, and of course, Times Square in New York.
Bishkek has long been without its center, a place to meet, stroll, and find inspiration. Ala-Too Square serves as a venue for official events, Panfilov Park is a green oasis, and TSUM is a historical shopping landmark. But none of these places has become the true heart of the city.
Bishkek will soon gain its "Bishkek Times Square." Just as the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue became a world-famous place, the intersection of Abdrahmanov and Ibraimov could become the new center of the city, connecting human flows, evening lights, and enlivening facades, transforming it from a mere point on the map into a symbol of urban energy.
Here, the famous fountains with horses will be restored and updated, reminding of the past and several generations of residents. They will be joined by new sculptures — snow leopards with cubs, symbolizing the capital, strength, and Kyrgyz culture. These artistic elements will serve as a link between history and modernity. Once, the fountains served as meeting places, and now they will become part of a new urban legend.
On the facades of buildings, LED screens, interactive 3D and 5D panels will be installed, making this space a living stage of light and movement. Imagine bright media facades and art projections that will enliven the evening atmosphere and showcase the art and energy of the city.
Pedestrian zones will be spacious, safe, and comfortable, with spots for street musicians, cafes with open terraces, and designer lighting, making it a pleasant place to linger.
Thus, a center of a new city is being formed, which will be not administrative or commercial, but cultural, modern, and full of life.
Times Square in New York has become a symbol of a city that is always on the move. And Bishkek's Times Square may symbolize a city that is awakening to a new era, self-confidence, and a future where the past is not forgotten but reinterpreted.
