In Almaty, as reported by the city police department, 17 traffic accidents occurred during the specified period, resulting in seven injuries.
According to law enforcement agencies, the main factors contributing to the accidents were failure to maintain distance, exceeding the speed limit, and driver inattention.
Timur Nogaybaev, the deputy head of the public safety department, noted that the first snow is always a test for both drivers and pedestrians. In such conditions, the road surface becomes slippery, increasing the braking distance. Nevertheless, many drivers continue to drive at their usual speed, ignoring changes in weather and road conditions.
The police urge all road users to exercise special caution, reduce speed, and avoid sharp maneuvers. Drivers who have not yet changed their summer tires to winter ones are also advised to do so and check the functionality of safety systems.
According to the akimat, by 7 a.m., about 1 cm of snow had fallen in Almaty, and up to 10 cm in the foothills.
There are 918 units of special equipment and 2,550 road workers deployed on the streets of the city. Special anti-icing agents are being applied to highways, bridges, interchanges, inclines, and declines, as well as sidewalks and bus stops. The work is being carried out around the clock.
