According to preliminary information, another worker remains under the debris and is conscious.
Unfortunately, a secondary collapse occurred while rescuers were trying to extract the injured person. The rescuers were not harmed; however, two other workers received assistance for minor injuries and declined hospitalization.
To evacuate the workers trapped at height, firefighters used a ladder truck. Due to the incident, traffic near the scene was restricted to carry out the rescue operation. Italy's Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli and Deputy Prosecutor of Rome Antonio Di Maio, who will oversee the investigation, arrived at the scene.
A waitress from one of the restaurants on Via del Colosseo said: "I heard the sound of falling debris, looked up — smoke, and saw one of the workers fall. These are people who come here every morning. I am in shock."
The prosecutor's office has opened a criminal case for causing harm to health through negligence. Judicial police officers are working at the scene, investigating the workplace accident. A technical examination has also been appointed to determine the causes of the collapse.
