According to information from the Roman police, the tragedy occurred when a 69-year-old Japanese man, identified as Morimasa Hibino, fell from the perimeter wall of the Pantheon. This was reported on CNN's website.

The man's body was found by a priest in a ditch approximately seven meters deep. The ancient level of the city is significantly lower than the modern streets, giving the Pantheon and other historical monuments the appearance of being submerged in the ground.

The daughter of the deceased, who was with him during the trip, reported that her father suddenly experienced health problems. According to her, he was sitting on the wall when he felt dizzy and lost his balance.

To retrieve the body, police had to break the gates leading to the ditch. At the time of the incident, the Pantheon, which also serves as a Catholic church, was closed to visitors.

Law enforcement noted that there have been several similar falls into this open ditch in recent years, which is located on the street and is regularly monitored by patrols.

A similar incident occurred in March in Rome when a 55-year-old Spanish tourist died after falling from a high wall near the Spanish Steps, a well-known landmark in the city.
