According to information published in The Washington Post, foreigners with chronic illnesses may be deprived of the chance to obtain a visa to the U.S. This became known through a document provided by the U.S. State Department.

This directive was sent to the country's diplomatic missions by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The document emphasizes the importance of considering the health of applicants. Certain conditions, such as cardiovascular, respiratory diseases, cancer, diabetes, obesity, neurological and mental disorders, may require treatment costs that can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It is also reported that the relevant authorities must check whether applicants have the means to cover medical expenses if necessary.

According to the Associated Press, visa officers must also consider the applicant's age, the number of children and elderly individuals under their care, as well as the presence of disabilities or special needs among them.

According to U.S. media reports, the new rules apply not only to immigration visas but also to some non-immigrant visas. However, experts believe that they will have the greatest impact on those seeking permanent residency in the U.S. At the same time, some humanitarian groups, such as refugees, have been designated as exceptions in this document.
