In Latvia, protests against the country's withdrawal from the convention on the protection of women from violence

Last weekend, about 10,000 people gathered in Riga to protest Latvia's decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention aimed at protecting women from violence, reports Meduza.
The protesters chanted various slogans, among which stood out "Do everything you can — the convention must win!" and "By copying Russia, you are not protecting Latvia!". The slogan "Betrayal!" was particularly prominent, becoming one of the most popular.
According to police information, two people were detained during the rally in Riga: one did not comply with law enforcement's demands, and the other attacked a participant in the rally.
Protests took place not only in Riga but also in other major cities in Latvia, as well as outside the country.
It is worth noting that on October 31, the Saeima of Latvia decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention. However, the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, refused to sign this bill, sending it back for revision. As a result, the Saeima postponed the issue for a year.
